Graduate Student, Northern Arizona University

I am Zuni Edgewater born for the Bitterwater Clan. My maternal grandfather is of the Red Running into the Water clan and my paternal grandfather is of the Salt clan. This is how I introduce myself as a Navajo woman. I am born and raised on the Navajo Nation and currently reside in Shonto which is a 2 hour drive north of Flagstaff and NAU. I am the middle child as I have an older brother and sister, a younger sister, and 2 younger brothers. I have been married for 6 years and my husband, Phillip, also received his B.S degree in physical education from NAU in 2016.

After high school, I attended UNLV for my undergraduate where I obtained a dual bachelor's in psychology and criminal justice. I returned home to the Navajo reservation and started working the local elementary school in the residential department where I assisted the director. Then I moved into a superintendent assistant position for a few more years before returning to school at NAU. I enrolled in the school counseling master's program which I graduated from in May 2019. I am a first-generation college student and currently enrolled in the PhD combined school/counseling psychology program. I will be the first person in my family to work toward a PhD and I am excited and worried because I'm not sure what to expect. However, I know I have the support of my family and husband so I am looking forward to the next several years.
